Welcome to my food blog where I share “Mum’s Greek Recipes,” a collection of traditional Greek dishes that I grew up enjoying, and recipes inspired by my Greek heritage.
In this blog, you will discover more than just authentic Greek Mediterranean dishes; each recipe is a small lesson in healthy eating. I take pride in explaining not just the ‘how’ but also the ‘why’ – providing insights into the nutritional benefits of the ingredients and the reasons behind their inclusion. My recipes are peppered with tips and facts, making them a guide to preparing nourishing meals for you and your loved ones.
For the seventh year straight, the Mediterranean diet has been hailed as the best overall diet by health experts, and it’s easy to see why. Renowned not just for its deliciousness but also for its health benefits, this diet has been linked to preventing a myriad of lifestyle disorders. My passion is to demonstrate how effortlessly you can weave these dishes into your daily life, transforming your meals into both a nutritional powerhouse and a culinary delight.
How “Mum’s Greek Recipes” came to be
As a young girl, I would often watch my mum cook. My homework was done in the kitchen, and because of this, I was quite often distracted by the beautiful smells of what my mum was preparing for dinner. As I got older, she would ask me to get more involved and help her out as I needed to know how to cook these dishes for when I got married. (Her words, not mine).
I always knew that the food my mum prepared for us as children was healthy. Unfortunately, as a child, I didn’t appreciate how healthy each recipe was, and quite often, half of that bowl of lentil soup would end up down the sink, (when my mum wasn’t looking of course!).
It wasn’t until my late teens, when I went to university and studied nutrition as part of my teaching degree, that I developed an appreciation for the healthy, Greek Mediterranean food that I grew up with. Since then, I have done a great deal of reading about the health benefits of Mediterranean foods and to this day I prepare the foods I grew up with for my own family.
My initial reason for typing all these recipes was to make my life easier when it came to preparing food for my own family, (and to stop ringing my mother every five minutes asking her how she makes something). But as my collection of recipes grew I thought it would be nice to create a booklet and to pass these recipes on to my daughter and nieces so they could have a copy of their grandmother’s recipes.
I am not going to lie, the whole process of typing up my mum’s recipes has not been easy. If anyone has asked their Greek mother for a recipe, it is quite excruciating trying to figure out the quantities of each ingredient that go into the recipe. When asked “how much milk or flour?”, mum’s response would be a ‘coffee cup full of milk’ or ‘handful of flour’, or ‘however much the mixture takes, or you can tell ‘me to mati’ (with the eye). I don’t know about your kitchen, but my kitchen has a variety of coffee cup sizes. I even bought my mum a set of measuring cups, but to this day she doesn’t use them and if she does, she doesn’t level off, so that idea went out the window fairly quickly.
My mum’s Greek recipes are also my mum’s sister’s recipes. It was quite comforting for a child who was a fussy eater, like me, to know that when I was going to my aunt’s house, the meals that she prepared would taste exactly like my mother’s. After all, their recipes are what my grandmother had taught them to cook.
Over the years, I ended up with a collection of recipes, and I would quite often get asked by family and friends, “how do you make your mum’s spinach pie?” or “how do you make your mum’s moussaka”? They knew I was the go-to person, as I had spent time with my mum cooking these dishes and they knew I had a copy of her recipe (with actual measurements) that we were happy to share with family and friends.
And now, I am more than happy to share ‘Mum’s Greek Recipes’ with you. I hope you and your family enjoy these recipes as much as my family and friends have and see how easy it actually is to follow a simple, healthy, Greek Mediterranean diet.

Hey Christie,
As a young growing man I was fed by your mum many many times. I beg for the moussaka and spinach recipes. You kids may have not eaten your mother’s food but I certainly did and loved it.
That’s hilarious, John! I will be sharing her Moussaka and Spanakopita recipes very soon.
Fantastic Chrissie!
Can’t wait to try your recipes.
Thank you for all your hard and wonderful work.
Thank you, Zani!
